Wood's HR gives Penn St. 5-2 win over Iowa in Big Ten opener
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Matt Wood hit a three-run homer, Tyler Shingledecker and Travis Luensmann combined on a two-hitter, and sixth-seeded Penn State defeated third-seeded Iowa 5-2 in the Big Ten Tournament opener. Wood, the Nittany Lion’s first first-team all-conference pick since 2012, smashed a drive over the right-field wall in the sixth inning for a 5-1 lead. The Lions and Hawkeyes play on Friday against the winner and loser from the Purdue-Rutgers game. Shingledecker went 5 2/3 innings, allowing both runs but just one hit, striking out eight to improve to 7-3. Luensmann came on to get the last out in the sixth after he allowed a single, combined with a throwing error, to produce Iowa's second run.
Rutgers gets first Big Ten tourney win, 10-3 over Purdue
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Freshman Josh Kuroda-Grauer’s two-run single capped a five-run seventh inning and second-seeded Rutgers beat seventh-seeded Purdue 10-3 on Thursday in the Big 10 Tournament. Four walks in the seventh broke a 3-3 tie before Tony Santa Maria singled in a run, Richie Schiekofer plated a run with a ground out and Kuroda-Grauer ripped a single into left. Ryan Lasko homered in the first inning and Mike Nyisztor hit a two-run double in the second for Rutgers, which leads the nation in scoring at 9.7 runs a game. Evan Sleight, who had a bases-loaded walk in the seventh, added a two-run double in the eighth.
Maryland edges Indiana 6-5 in 11 innings in Big Ten tourney
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Ian Petrutz singled to tie the game in the bottom of the 10th inning before being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the 11th as top-seeded Maryland survived an upset bid by No. 8 seed Indiana for a 6-5 victory in the weather-delayed first round of the Big Ten Tournament. Maryland (45-10), which posted the best regular-season record in program history and came in on a seven-game win streak, advances to play the winner of the nightcap between No. 4 seed Illinois and 10th-seeded Michigan on Friday. Indiana (25-31) will play the loser of the nightcap on Friday.
Stewart, Michigan beat Illinois 7-5 in Big Ten Tournament
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Joe Stewart went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and three runs to help Michigan beat Illinois 7-5 in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament. No. 5 seed Michigan (29-25) plays top-seeded Maryland in the quarterfinals. Tito Flores singled to lead off the eighth inning and scored when Joey Velazquez hit a two-out line drive to right field. Jake Marti — after falling behind 0-2 — drew a walk and Jordon Rogers, who pinch ran for Velazquez at second base, scored on a single to left field by Clark Elliott to give the Wolverines a 6-4 lead. Taylor Jackson finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for the Fighting Illini. Cal Hejza, Ryan Hampe and Cam McDonald added two hits apiece.
