The Aurora boys couldn't maintain a fast start in a 51-44 loss. Nate Boerkircher scored 16. Tate Nachtigal added 14 for the Huskies. Next action for the boys will be Thursday at Kearney Catholic as part of a girls'/boys' double header on the Wolf.
"I am thrilled to bring Mike Dawson back to Nebraska to re-join our coaching staff," Frost said. "Coach Dawson has a great history with our coaching staff and brings all of the attributes we look for in an assistant coach. He is a man of great character, has outstanding defensive acumen and knowledge of our defensive system, is a proven teacher and recruiter and relates well to his players."
Dawson rejoins the Nebraska staff after spending the 2019 season coaching outside linebackers for the New York Giants. Prior to the 2019 season, Dawson coached Nebraska's defensive line for the 2018 season and served in the same capacity on Frost's coaching staff at UCF in 2016 and 2017.
A coaching veteran in his 21st season, Dawson has coached at the FCS, FBS and professional levels. He has spent 17 seasons in the collegiate ranks, including 11 at FBS schools. Dawson also boasts four years of coaching experience in the National Football League and has coached both outside linebackers and defensive lineman in college and the NFL.
Dawson has helped build impressive defenses throughout his career, including working with a UCF squad that ranked second nationally in takeaways in 2017, and a Philadelphia Eagles defense that ranked second in the NFL in sacks in 2014. Dawson coached two All-Big Ten defensive linemen in his one season at Nebraska in 2018, and has coached four defenders to all-conference accolades in his two most recent college seasons.
"I am excited to rejoin Coach Frost and the rest of the Nebraska staff in Lincoln," Dawson said. "The opportunity to coach at a school with Nebraska's football tradition and commitment is special. I am fired up to represent the N, and sell Husker Football and the University of Nebraska to young men around the country.
"Our family fell in love with Nebraska during our one year here. The passion of the fans and the culture Coach Frost has brought is extraordinary. We look forward to making it home again."
Nebraska has also completed contract extensions for assistant coaches Greg Austin, Travis Fisher and Ryan Held, extending each of their contracts through Dec. 31, 2021. Austin has added the title of Run Game Coordinator in addition to his role as Offensive Line Coach. Fisher and Held each received salary increases, with Held adding the title of Recruiting Coordinator.
BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have fired manager Alex Cora a day after baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred implicated him in the sport's sign-stealing scandal. Cora was the Astros’ bench coach when they won the 2017 World Series and led Boston to the title the following year in his first season as manager. MLB also had been investigating allegations the Red Sox had stolen signs en route to their 2018 World Series championship.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A person familiar with the deal says the Minnesota Twins have worked out a four-year, $92 million contract with third baseman and 2015 American League MVP Josh Donaldson. The 34-year-old Donaldson returned after an injury-spoiled 2018 to bat .259 with 37 homers, 94 RBIs and a .900 OPS for the Atlanta Braves last season. The deal likely means a position change for third baseman Miguel Sano (sah-NOH’), who just finalized his three-year, $30 million contract with Minnesota on Tuesday.
UNDATED (AP) — Tight end Antonio Gates has formally announced his retirement after a 16-year NFL career spent entirely with the Chargers. He holds the league record for tight ends with 116 touchdown catches, doing it without playing a down of college football. Gates didn’t play last season and is the Chargers’ all-time leader for TDs, receptions and receiving yards, grabbing 955 passes for 11,841 yards.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly (KEEK’-lee) is retiring after eight seasons, announcing in a video posted on the team’s website that he feels now is the right chance to move on. Kuechly was selected to seven Pro Bowls and was a first-team All-Pro five times. However, he suffered three concussions during his career, which may have led to his decision.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa defensive end A.J. Epenesa is leaving school a year early to enter the NFL draft, posting on Instagram that his time with the Hawkeyes was everything he hoped it would be. He was an Associated Press second-team All-American and an AP All-Big Ten first-team pick this past season, recording 11.5 sacks to become the first Hawkeye to hit double-figures in that category in consecutive seasons since 2002-03. Epenesa paced the Big Ten with 10.5 sacks as a backup in 2018.
The Aurora boys led most of the way before falling to the number one team in Class B 49-44. Nate Boerkircher scored 14. Tate Nachtigal added 11 for the 3-8 Huskies. Connor Creech became the first 1000 point scorer in Hastings High Boys History in the win for the 12-0 Tigers.
